Spatiotemporal Data Analysis Workshop
Prework 2: Matrix algebra
and Matlab
This week we'll learn some basic matrix notation and see how
it's implemented in Matlab.
Last updated 9/13/06. To be
completed prior to class session Weds., Sept. 6th.
Introduction:
As a result of Homework 1, you have some
experience with the CLUE/Matlab environment.
This week we'll review some basic matrix manipulations and see
how to perform them easily using Matlab.
Reading:
Strang, Ch. 1.
Strang breaks his chapters down into small
sections. If this material is unfamiliar, I suggest you read a
section per day cumulatively.
Optional: Elsner and Tsonis
(Singular Spectrum Analysis: A New tool in time series analysis, New
York: Plenum, 1996) build from Strang a simpler introduction to linear
algebra concepts in their Chapters 1
and 2. You may find it useful as well.
Reading questions:
No explicit reading questions for this week.
Products:
Write down the matrix rules 1A-1G, and 1K-1M, in a manner that is easy
for you to reference and use later. Print out a copy to turn in
and a copy to keep.
